My personal favourite Ewan-with-long-hair film is Velvet Goldmine, in which he plays Curt Wild, a fictional glam rock star. It's a fantastic film visually, with great music and lots of qualiy people in it, such as Eddie Izzard and Toni Colette. And as the icing on the cake, it stars Ewan McGregor as a messed-up, pansexual hybrid of Iggy Pop and Kurt Cobain.
He's got trailer-trash long blonde hair -
- he takes all his clothes off -
- and he gets off with Jonathan Rhys Meyers -
- what more could you ask for?
Recommended reading: the Velvet Goldmine Glitter Page and The Ziggy Stardust Companion.

Wigs?
Inspired by a comment from a long-haired reader, who emailed me to say that both Johnny Depp as Captain Jack Sparrow and Orlando Bloom as Legolas are wearing wigs, and therefore don't really have long hair. He also pointed out that this is why their hair looked so perfect.
Since my main purpose here is to admire men who look sexy, it hadn't occurred to me that the real/wig distinction was important. But I can appreciate that it matters to people who put time and effort into growing their hair long and keeping it in good condition.
So I thought I should explain my position on this issue. I'm not going to restrict this site to real long hair, because it would be far too difficult to verify, and in the end it doesn't matter to me. My main criterion is whether someone looks good; if they're aesthetically pleasing, I'm not bothered about the ontological status of their hair (i.e. is it real or a wig?).
However, if you'd like a more intellectually satisfying explanation, here it is:
While Johnny Depp didn't have real long hair in Pirates of the Caribbean, Captain Jack Sparrow did. Similarly, while Orlando Bloom was wearing a wig in LOTR, Legolas wasn't.
In these cases, the object of my admiration is the fictional character, whose hair is real, rather than the real actor, whose hair is fictional.
Any thoughts?

Ewan McGregor II: Attack of the Clones
In 2002, Ewan McGregor appeared with long(ish) hair again in Star Wars Episode II: Attack of the Clones. Obi-Wan's not a Padawan any more, so gone is the cropped hair with a single long plait that he had in Episode I. It's now thick and long at the back, plus a full beard. (Alright, it's not very long, but it gives me an excuse to put up pictures of Ewan McGregor in bondage.)
I absolutely love the way he sits in this scene. It's a proper old-fashioned heroic stance. And who could say no to a Jedi in this outfit, complete with leather boots?
After inspecting the Clone Army he runs back outside in pursuit of Jango Fett, brandishing his lightsabre and getting very wet and breathless in the process - nice!
Any slightly kinky Ewan admirers will remember the various scenes in which Obi-Wan gets captured, chained up, and even held in a kind of rotating blue-light virtual bondage.
The longest bondage scene is at the start of the climactic battle on Geonosis. Anakin and Padme are brought out into the arena where they see Obi-Wan, already chained to a massive column, with his arms over his head.
Double chained-up Jedi goodness.
Tune in again soon to see my personal favourite Ewan-McGregor-with-long-hair appearance!

Ewan McGregor I: Shallow Grave
This post is the first of a three-part series celebrating the beauty of Ewan McGregor and the variety of long hair styles that he's had over the years in his films.
But first, a couple of totally gratuitous pictures:
Unlike Johnny Depp, Ewan doesn't have one of those absolutely perfect faces - he's a bit rougher round the edges, and this makes him very sexy indeed. He always looks masculine somehow, even when he's wearing lipstick and a dress:
That scene is from Shallow Grave, a great British film directed by Danny Boyle, which I first saw when I was about 13. I'd never seen Ewan McGregor before, and I was instantly smitten. He was very young and his hair hardly counts as long, but it's definitely on the way.
There's something very sexy about the casual pose, ripped jeans, and cheeky grin in this picture. I like his big hands too.
Just about managing to look sexy, even in this terrible early-90s shirt-and-waistcoat combo.
He looks so young!
A bit pissed, a bit angry, a bit dishevelled: yes please.
Bless!
Come back soon for more exciting Ewan explorations - there's beards and bondage in the next one!

Dylan Timmins (Damien Bodie)
Neighbours' resident tortured-but-sensitive bad boy Dylan Timmins (played by Damien Bodie) and his ever-lengthening hair.
In prison. Again. Unjustly. What is it that's so appealing about long-haired boys being irresistibly drawn towards the dark side...?
The furrowed brow.
Angry because he's not her muse any more. Bless. I like all the necklaces.
On his knees.
Classic Neighbours in-doorway-topless-with-towel-over-shoulder shot.

Russell Brand (and a bit of Matt Morgan)
Those of you from outside the UK probably haven't heard of Russell Brand. He's a stand-up comedian and TV presenter who has an incredible way with words and a beautifully twisted outlook on the world. It's hard to describe these things without sounding stupid, so if you want to know more, please visit the fansite. You can also see clips of Russell on Youtube, for example here and here.
In addition to his wit and talent, Russell is also extremely sexy. And, joy of joys, seems to be growing his hair. It's nowhere near long enough yet, but we live in hope.
Here he is looking serious on Jonathan Ross's show.
Classic backcombed and scruffy style.
And again, with a cheeky raised-eyebrows look to complement it...
Doing the stand-up thing.
Presenting his 6 Music show. I like the dishevelled hair + white T-shirt look.
Uncharacteristically neat and shiny hair.
From a recent GQ article where Russ discusses his style. He's wearing leather gloves. (Full version available on the fansite.)
Baby Russ, aahh!
After this small feast of Russell, you may be wondering who Matt Morgan is. Among many other things, Russell presents a radio show on BBC 6 Music on Sunday mornings and his co-presenters are Trevor Lock and Matt Morgan:
Lovely as Trevor may be, I'm afraid he can't possibly be included here as his hair is not long by any stretch of the imagination. Matt, on the other hand, has relatively long locks and has a mini version of Russell's cult following. (I said cult.) So to make them happy, here are a couple of bonus pictures of Matt.
Update September 2007: Russell and Matt's radio show is now on Radio 2 on Saturday nights. New site is here.
