Sebastian Bach

I admire the blokes featured here for all sorts of reasons besides their appearance: talent, intelligence, that sort of thing. But I'm afraid that in the case of Sebastian Bach, there is no such excuse. I hardly know anything about him (although a quick nndb search just turned up the fact that his sons are called Paris Francis Muir Bach and London Siddhartha Halford Bach, which is quite impressive) or about Skid Row. But he is, without question, very very sweet eye candy.

So, without further ado:

Thanks to 1966batmobile.com for this one:

This is as good as long hair gets, I think. At times it's a bit too clean and perfectly cut and veers dangerously close to 'like you've just stepped out of a salon', at other times it's almost poodle-y, but never quite crosses the line.

So, in conclusion: mmmmmmm.

Should you wish to research Mr Bach further, his Myspace page is here and his official website is here.

Wimbledon Past: Andre Agassi

At the beginning of the 1990s, the tennis world was dominated by Swedes and Germans. The Steffis, Stefans, Michaels and Borises were wholesome and athletic, but not particularly inspirational when it came to (my) adolescent fantasies. Then Andre Agassi appeared on the scene.

His long bleached hair and big dark soulful eyes made me melt. The stories of his bad-boy past didn't hurt either.

He posed looking more like Bret Michaels than John McEnroe.

He was small for a tennis player and not especially elegant, but he returned serve better than anyone else and bounded around the court like an enthusiastic puppy with his long blonde hair flying behind him.

And there was always that raw emotion and puppy-dog-eyed vulnerability bubbling under the surface.

The summer of 1992 saw a wave of Andre-mania as he battled his way through to win Wimbledon, and famously posed with his very eighties girlfriend: big hair, leather jacket, and tight jeans. For me, she was something to aspire to, just like the girls in Guns'n'Roses videos, tattooed and smoking and hanging off Axl's arm.

After that, my Agassi obsession slowly waned. He left his childhood sweetheart for a series of romances with the likes of Barbara Streisand and Brooke Shields, and the wild-child outsider seemed to have become properly mainstream.

A couple of summers later, I came into school and was greeted by the news that Agassi had cut all his hair off. A sad day and the end of an era.

Jonathan Rhys Meyers

Young Irish actor with a really beautiful, unusual face. He has amazing cheekbones and always looks sort of ethereal. According to IMDB:

In order to avoid the boyish and somewhat androgynous junkies and weak- willed characters he found himself typecast as, he underwent a fitness regime in 2004 and gained and maintained about 25 extra pounds of muscle, so he can also be considered for more masculine roles.

I can see why he would want to avoid typecasting, but I have to confess I have a soft spot for "boyish and somewhat androgynous junkies". And he really does carry off the look beautifully.

Looking very girly indeed in this picture.

This should be the dictionary definition of a 'come-hither' look.

Cowboy hat, long wet hair...yes please.

I first saw him in the BBC adaptation of Mervyn Peake's Gormenghast, in which he was perfectly cast as Steerpike.

He's appeared in films set in a variety of historical periods, and as a result has had all sorts of interesting long hair styles. Here he is as Chiron in Titus, with bleach-blonde hair and some sort of silver outfit.

As Cassander in Alexander, looking a bit older and tougher.

As bloodthirsty Pitt Mackeson in Ride With The Devil. Those cheekbones are amazing.

And finally, some intriguing pictures that (to me at least) seem to be overtly homoerotic. I don't know the source of these images, but I'm sure that won't stop you enjoying them...

Edit: These are from The Governess, an interesting film starring Minnie Driver which I saw on telly the other night. JRM plays a rebellious, oversexed teenager and gets his kit off twice.

Antonio Banderas

I think there's a perfect balance of masculine and feminine features which makes a man irresistibly sexy. Pretty boys like Brad Pitt and Johnny Depp look best when they're a bit rough round the edges (stubble, scruffy hair, etc.) whereas big blokes with more masculine features, such as Antonio Banderas, need long girly hair to soften their look. He's not my usual type - a bit too macho - but I think these pictures are beautiful.

I know, guns shouldn't be sexy. But cold metal + hot skin = mmmm.

I don't know if it's the long straight hair, the direct gaze, or something about his mouth, but whatever it is, more please...

Sleepy.

Another intense stare.

Great photo from GQ magazine.

Ewan McGregor III: Velvet Goldmine

My personal favourite Ewan-with-long-hair film is Velvet Goldmine, in which he plays Curt Wild, a fictional glam rock star. It's a fantastic film visually, with great music and lots of qualiy people in it, such as Eddie Izzard and Toni Colette. And as the icing on the cake, it stars Ewan McGregor as a messed-up, pansexual hybrid of Iggy Pop and Kurt Cobain.

He's got trailer-trash long blonde hair -

- he takes all his clothes off -

- and he gets off with Jonathan Rhys Meyers -

- what more could you ask for?

Recommended reading: the Velvet Goldmine Glitter Page and The Ziggy Stardust Companion.

Wigs?

Inspired by a comment from a long-haired reader, who emailed me to say that both Johnny Depp as Captain Jack Sparrow and Orlando Bloom as Legolas are wearing wigs, and therefore don't really have long hair. He also pointed out that this is why their hair looked so perfect.

Since my main purpose here is to admire men who look sexy, it hadn't occurred to me that the real/wig distinction was important. But I can appreciate that it matters to people who put time and effort into growing their hair long and keeping it in good condition.

So I thought I should explain my position on this issue. I'm not going to restrict this site to real long hair, because it would be far too difficult to verify, and in the end it doesn't matter to me. My main criterion is whether someone looks good; if they're aesthetically pleasing, I'm not bothered about the ontological status of their hair (i.e. is it real or a wig?).

However, if you'd like a more intellectually satisfying explanation, here it is:

While Johnny Depp didn't have real long hair in Pirates of the Caribbean, Captain Jack Sparrow did. Similarly, while Orlando Bloom was wearing a wig in LOTR, Legolas wasn't.

In these cases, the object of my admiration is the fictional character, whose hair is real, rather than the real actor, whose hair is fictional.

Any thoughts?

Ewan McGregor II: Attack of the Clones

In 2002, Ewan McGregor appeared with long(ish) hair again in Star Wars Episode II: Attack of the Clones. Obi-Wan's not a Padawan any more, so gone is the cropped hair with a single long plait that he had in Episode I. It's now thick and long at the back, plus a full beard. (Alright, it's not very long, but it gives me an excuse to put up pictures of Ewan McGregor in bondage.)

I absolutely love the way he sits in this scene. It's a proper old-fashioned heroic stance. And who could say no to a Jedi in this outfit, complete with leather boots?

After inspecting the Clone Army he runs back outside in pursuit of Jango Fett, brandishing his lightsabre and getting very wet and breathless in the process - nice!

Any slightly kinky Ewan admirers will remember the various scenes in which Obi-Wan gets captured, chained up, and even held in a kind of rotating blue-light virtual bondage.

The longest bondage scene is at the start of the climactic battle on Geonosis. Anakin and Padme are brought out into the arena where they see Obi-Wan, already chained to a massive column, with his arms over his head.

Double chained-up Jedi goodness.

Tune in again soon to see my personal favourite Ewan-McGregor-with-long-hair appearance!
